Session 5

1. Receiving a Prophetic Word

It is imperative that we receive the prophetic Word, coming from the very Throne Room of God, to unlock our gifts and calling, in order to fulfill our destiny and our part in taking the Kingdom to the nations.

God has already predestined us to have certain gifts and callings, but in the “kayos” time these gifts are unlocked for us to flow in.

Some of us have received key prophetic words over our lives to unlock the flow of ministry in our lives. What we do with it, is of utmost importance to walk in God’s predestined purposes for our lives and to advance His Kingdom.

Mark 4:23-25

“And He said to them, Be careful what you are hearing.

The measure (of thought and study) you give (to the truth you hear)

will be the measure (of virtue and knowledge)

That comes back to you –

and more (besides) will be given to you who hear.” (Amp)

The prophetic word usually contains three aspects:

a) A promise, or a sequence of events

b) Conditions for the promise to come to pass

Whether the Lord gives you a dream, a vision, a visitation, or any other type of seer experience with negative revelation included, He often does not tell you what you see and experience is the present status, an evil plan from the devil or planned by God; but He gives you the ability to stop it through prayer - if God is willing of course.

There are times when God simply informs us about judgment that is coming most of the time; He is looking for a faith-filled man or woman to "stand in the gap" so that He won't have to judge an entire city or region.

2. The aspect of Timing

Eccl 3:17

“For there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.”- KJV

Our earthly time clock is in a totally different realm than that of God. He has a “kairos” (opportune) time for every promise. We need to know that we cannot enforce God’s promises to fit into our time frame, but our obedience to His conditions will definitely bring us in readiness to receive our promises in His “suddenlies”. His ways are not our ways and if we try to make things happen in our time, we will create an Ishmael, like Abraham.

Hab 2:3

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”

Sometimes God will speak very specifically through the Prophet, e.g. “this time next year”, or “ten days”, etc. The outcome of such a prophetic Word will prove him a true Prophet of God or not.

He often uses terms like, soon or now or in this day. This cannot be interpreted in our understanding of time, but we should simply put our trust in God and know that He has “an appointed time” and that we need to hold fast to His word in faith until that time.

Sometimes you will be surprised at how LONG you have to wait. Some prophecies take many years to come to pass. Sometimes a word comes true the very next day. It's all up to God how HE chooses to fulfill a word.

Often, but not necessarily always, how you react IN FAITH at the very moment a prophecy is given to you, may depend on how quickly or how certainly a word will come true for you.

3. Waiting it out

When God tells you to get ready for instance or to “wait until” a certain promised event, prepare yourself and be “on the ready” to move when He moves in a “suddenly”.

His suddenlies come when we least expect it, but when we have positioned ourselves for it in obedient waiting in faith (Acts 2:2). The disciples had to position themselves, waiting in prayer until in a “suddenly” the Holy Spirit was poured out.

Is. 64:4-6 reveals to us the secret conditions in the waiting process:

“For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.

Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways”

Sometimes people will run with a prophecy without taking note of the conditions and the timing and then often get disillusioned if it doesn’t work out the way or in the time they expected it to happen.

In the waiting process patience must be developed as our faith is stretched and we must be alert to be instantly obedient to carry out what He tells us to do in the period leading up to the event.

Heb 6:11-12

“And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” KJV

5. Processing the Prophetic Word

How you take care of the Prophetic Word that you have received, will determine your destiny, operation and function in ministry. Remember the parable of the sower and the seed in Mark 4. Do not be a forgetful hearer.

6. Confirmations and Prophetic Signposts

You will already know in your spirit that this is the direction in which God has been steering you by the Holy Spirit.

You might already have received:

v impressions of “knowing” certain things by the Holy Spirit

v a “picture” or “vision” of something

v a dream that you know was by the Spirit of God

v a scripture passage that came up in your spirit spontaneously

v a word of knowledge of something or about someone, that was confirmed

v a revelation of a deep truth in God’s Word

7. Pitfalls

We have an adversary that definitely doesn’t want us to bring revelatory knowledge to the church and everyone who is filled with God’s Spirit is able to prophesy through the inspiration of the Spirit.

DOUBT, FEAR, HOPELESSNESS AND SLOTHFULNESS WILL ROB YOU OF YOUR PROMISES.

8. Flowing in the Prophetic Power

Prophets have to grow into the image and character of The Prophet, Jesus the Christ! They will have to follow in His footsteps, namely to take up the cross and lay down their lives in order to walk in the resurrection power of the Holy Spirit and carry the glory in earthen vessels. There is no other way to come into the glory of the resurrection power of the Holy Spirit than by the cross. We have to die to ourselves, our agenda, our plans and ideas and be totally led by the Spirit of God, doing only as He leads, saying only what we hear Him saying in total obedience.

The greater the call, the greater and longer the periods of trial and testing to produce that weight of glory that the apostle Paul speaks of in 2 Cor. 4:17.

9. Freedom to Express what I receive

from God.

There are certain ingredients necessary to flow in the prophetic anointing:

1. Love for God to only be available to Him for what pleases Him;

2. A desire to hear His voice and to exhort and encourage the body of Christ;

3. A discipline to spend time in His Presence;

4. Obedience to step out in faith when the unction comes on you to speak forth a Word in season.

Our focus should be to please God and to glorify His Name by being obedient.

It is a matter of just simply stepping out in faith and speak what you hear. As you begin to speak, you will find that the words will begin to flow. Mostly the Holy Spirit doesn’t give you the Word in full at the beginning, but just an impression or thought. You just need to release it and say something like, “I sense that the Spirit is saying……” or “I get the impression…” and it will flow. Do not use words like, “Thus sayest the Lord….” ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

The Holy Spirit often drops something into your spirit about something or somebody when you were not even thinking of that person or situation. When your mind argues with what you have heard, it usually is from God.

If you hear something and you are not sure whether it is from God, simply ask the Lord to confirm it to you. If it is from the Lord, it will surely stay with you.

It is wisdom to submit what you hear in a setting of mature intercessors or a cell group under the authority of leadership in the church where it can be judged according to the Scripture.

Three tests for a prophetic utterance are that it should be scriptural and should bear witness to the body and that it should come to pass. Remember that the gift of prophecy is always encouraging and uplifting. Those in the Prophetic Office may give a word of correction, but it will always include a promise of uplifting if heeded.

See to it that you are prayed up in the Spirit, and ask God to give you a Word of Encouragement that will edify the body or an individual. Then simply step out in obedience and let it flow.
